Over in Japan this week, it's been a pretty quiet time for the video game industry, meaning that the evergreen titan Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has managed to speed past the competition and claim pole position with 11,585 units sold.
It's a good week for the Switch, mind, with tentpole first-party Nintendo games (and Minecraft) making up the majority of the top ten, with only Rise of the Ronin and ARK: Survival Ascended representing Sony's PlayStation 5.

The Switch is similarly dominating the hardware chart again, with all three SKUs making up a total of 64,281 units. The PS5, meanwhile, has managed a total of 21,297, while the Xbox only sold a measly 2,789 units. It's certainly interesting to see the Switch continuing to perform so well when its eventual successor's shadow is looming so heavily.

Will the Switch's total dominance in Japan ever end?.............Switch 2 perhaps.
Well… I mean, honestly… since Rebirth we really haven’t had a flat-out stunner of a game release, so I’m not surprised. The release slate has been positively barren the last two months and looks barren next month as well. We can only hope there’s big showcases incoming or else the evergreen titles will be all we see this year in most charts.
Yeah, yeah, you can make the argument for Dragon’s Dogma 2 if you want, but, as someone that’s played a good chunk of it, I think the game was a bit overhyped. It’s fun, but it’s not something designed to be a massive hit.
Yeah, the last few weeks have been pretty quiet in terms of new retail releases but that will end with the next week's report.
Also @Olliemar28 if I can ask, even if off-topic: have you heard any news on why the weekly GfK UK report for retail sales is this late? The last time we've seen such a delay was back in November 2022
The continued success in JP has no doubt contributed to this rumoured Super Switch release date push back to 2025. I am more than happy to start seeing sales drop off now.
Wow it's not everyday that you see a 10 year old game stay relevant for this long let alone finally made it to number one again in the top 10 chart.

With zero info about the eventual successor OR its launch lineup offerings, what is there for people to drop jaws about and save money for over a current gen console with proverbial appeal, a massive library of quality experiences and firmware hiccups largely ironed out over the years of memetically mocked but clandestinely vital "stability updates"?

Animal Crossing had the more impressive growth than Mario Kart. MK8D +338 while ACNH +1736. The headline could have read, Evergreen Titles Continue to Grow as Rest of Industry Sleeps.
Switch dominating the Japanese charts in both software, with the usual suspects and luckily also Showtime still high, and hardware, love to see it!
I can’t wait to start seeing TTYD here. Please, people get this game. You won’t regret it.
@johnvboy with the niche the Swith has filled, and the Switch 2 prob coming in at $400...Switch 2 won't catch Switch in sales. I'd love it if it did, but I don't think it will. There going to need that 1st party killer line up the Switch had in those first few years to make a good dent in current Switch sales. Just my opinion.
With Stellar Blade and Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes physical release, next week should be interesting.

I know I keep saying this all the time but i'm glad to see PS5 is still get appreciated in Japan despite the sales number every week is still below than Switch sales.
It's crazy to think that Paper Mario TTYD remake might just be the biggest game release for the next few months. Maybe Sea of Thieves (PS5 release) may make a small dent in these charts, but it's hard to say.

just imagine if mario kart 9 ends up a switch 2 launch title (considering how much of a sales juggernaut the series is)
Mario kart 8 is amazing and all but i am curious to see where they go from here with it and what gimmicks stay or are introduced. (for me i enjoyed what anti-gravity brought to the table and wouldnt mind seeing it join the glider and whatnot in terms of reoccurring elements)
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe turns seven on Sunday, but it’s still posting numbers that would be dream launch day sales for some titles. Respect.
Not sure Eiyuden is going to move the needle much, but we’ll see. Stellar Blade otoh has some hype. Maybe six figures?
If Nintendo decided to never release another console, I honestly wouldn't blame them. They've proven everything already, they have nothing else to prove. You want amazing graphics and huge worlds, you have 2 other consoles to choose from. Honestly what can Nintendo really bring to that space that hasn't been done already?
It's a little bittersweet seeing MK8 at the top. It's nice that great game like MK8 got the success it deserved on the Switch after the failure of the Wii U, but it's also sad to see a port of a decade old game overshadow current games like Princess Peach Showtime.
@Mgalens I can't help but feel mk9 is a strong Nintendo Cosmo launch title. Time wise it syncs up + it's insane popularity would be a great system seller. Hopefully we find out soon..

Switch 2 is going to be a beast, as long as Nintendo keep it simple, and build on the massive success of the original.
