The adorable Yoshi is back on Nintendo Switch - Yoshi's Crafted World is launching for the system on 29th March - and we now have some extra little details surrounding its release.
One particular tidbit which is always of interest for those who prefer to purchase their Switch games digitally is the file size, and we now know that Yoshi's Crafted World will take up 5.6GB space on your console or SD card. This figure comes from the game's official Nintendo UK page, although the equivalent Japanese page states that it will take up 5.3GB in that region as we reported on earlier today.
Interestingly, this just so happens to be around 3GB smaller than Yoshi's Woolly World on Wii U (which clocks in at 8.3GB). Crafted World isn't a port of that older release, so it shouldn't be expected that the two might be the same, but it's an intriguing comparison nonetheless.
Elsewhere, the page confirms that the game supports handheld, docked, and tabletop modes as you might expect, as well the Pro Controller, play for up to two players, and save data cloud functionality. English, German, French, Spanish, Dutch, Italian, Russian, Japanese, Chinese, and Korean languages are also supported.
Are you thinking of trying out Yoshi's next adventure? Will you be going digital or physical? Let us know in the comments.

Hope it doesn't mean it's 3GB shorter.
We can sleep soundly, knowing that the Pro Controller community won’t be outraged at a casual game not supporting it.
@AlexOlney I'm assuming it's 3GBs worth of even-better-compression? Nintendo's file size compression wizards deserve a medal.
I don't think people know Woolly World's file size off the top of their heads.
They've removed the fmv yoshi too hot for tv bits.
@AlexOlney hope it's 3GB cheaper
Folk grumble when a game's massive, grumble when it's smaller 🤣
@hihelloitsme Ofcourse not
Woolly World was really good so I'm looking forward to this one
Definitely not a good sign. Wooly World was 8.3 GB but it had a resolution of 720p. The same game at 1080p resolution should be around 16GB. You are telling me that new generation Yoshi, which use better graphical assets an its playing at 1080p is 3GB shorter? At least Mario Odyssey is 5.7 GB, so maybe there is hope.
Let's not jump to conclusions. Patience young padawans.
I’m really looking forward to this one. Quite fond of this series and this latest chapter looks absolutely delightful.
@jcgonzmo I reckon the files are smaller because of better / higher compression because of more CPU power on the switch to handle it on the fly (decompression). Maybe this post makes no sense, but basically because the switch has more processing power it can handle better compression...
I want this!!! Its nice to know it could have almost the same length as SMO due to similar file size!
@jcgonzmo Not sure your math is correct but you nailed comparing this with Mario game size. Thanks!
Nintendo seem to be able to pack Switch games into absolutely tiny amounts. BOTW for example was only 13 GB and I'm sure there's better examples.
@jcgonzmo You realise that makes no sense right? The rendering resolution and amount of game content aren't tied to the file size. There are plenty of reasons for the file size to be so much smaller than the last game so I wouldn't be concerned
@jcgonzmo the Wii U version probably had duplicate files. That was a thing for donkey Kong tropical freeze.
I'm planning to go physical for this one, but looking around online earlier, I couldn't find it available to preorder online...
lego city undercover was shrunken down to just over 1/3 of the original size for the switch.
smaller file size doesn't indicate lower quality.
and they're probably saving some space by not including prerecorded videos.(where those in the original version of wooly world?)
Physical. It was be priced less than a downloaded version and will have a resale value.
Pretty sure it's Nintendo just being usual masters at file size compression. I believe Smash Ultimate also has a ton more songs than Smash Wii U, yet the music in Ultimate takes up less space than it did in the Wii U version.
I’m not gonna bother I didn’t enjoy woolly World. Gorgeous but boring I thought
Pre-Order cancelled.
@jcgonzmo Just read somewhere that for New Super Mario Delux The file size is just 2.5GB. In comparison, New Super Mario Bros. U + Luigi U is 13GB on Wii U.
So compression is not the same I guess...
Oh noes! But we all know that file size is directly related to quality and gameplay time!! That's why NSMBU Dx is under 3Gb. Not only is this just a port like SSBU was of SSB4, but they took files and levels and other gubbins away, just to charge us a standard game price!?
/s
This looks pretty slick. I've had my eye out for it since I watched Treehouse gameplay coverage awhile back.
They might have learned from Smash Bros compression and managed to keep it down . I am still interested in this!
@Shinnos I preordered on Amazon. The US store has it on sale plus a 5% coupon- came to $56. I miss Amazon’s gaming preorder deal 😢
Just get me Kirby's Epic Yarn on the Switch already >.<
I would also love Kirby's Epic Yarn on the Switch as well as Donkey Kong Country HD on the Switch! I don't care about size as long it is a good game.
@jcgonzmo that's not how resolution works, it'd be the same size file. In fact most PS4/XBOX games use the same assets across 1080p and 4K with very few having higher quality textures. Also as you said wasn't Mario Odyssey only around 5.7gb at launch and that's hardly a small game
@Emperor-Palpsy I'm one of those ragers. The Joy-Con are too small and uncomfortable. There is also connection issues with the right handed one's if you're more than 6 feet from your console. The Pro Controller is extremely expensive and I want to be able to use it with every game on the console.
Can't wait day 1
It's not just about compression or asset quality. We know Crafted World is running on UE but Woolly World was on a bespoke engine - we have no idea how these different frameworks ship in terms of file size (targeting different hardware too).
@Blofse Kinda. I'd just bet on better compression in general. Optimising takes time as well, and generally they only do it when it's necessary. I'm sure they could've gotten Woolly World down in size as well, if they wanted to. But it wasn't necessary; HDDs are cheaper, and so are discs. So they just put more time and effort into optimising this game for the system.
Nintendo learning how to optimise? Isn’t related in anyway with the price of a « not more than » 8gb cartridge ??!.
@VHSGLITCH for a second I thought I had commented on this article and not remembered. Hi fellow glitch
More compression... cheaper cartridges... longer load times.
@Glitchling78 George Takei voice- “Oh helloooooooo.”
Preordered this game on amazon years back. Glad to finally get my hands on it
Im so looking forward too this
This game looks adorable.
@Mamabear Thanks, although I'm in the UK and couldn't find it up on Amazon.co.uk...
I really hope the Master of compression by Nintendo also do the same thing for : FF X/X-2 HD and FF XII the Zodiac Age.
I expect smaller numbers than 16 GB but still have same quality as PS4 version or at least not a broken games.
@Emperor-Palpsy You like less options? Okay, then...
@RunGMhx : The New Super Mario Bros. games have never been that big. The complete package on Wii U is only 2.4GB or so.
Meanwhile NSMB2 on 3DS was only few hundred megs.
@Silly_G Complete package on Wii U according to 3 different articles is 13GB, something that has to do apparently with video being streamed on Switch while not on Wii U. Something similar might be at play with Yoshi where the size doesn't include videos while the Wii U size does....
Nintendo releases a game and we talk about how awesomely small they managed to make it.
Meanwhile so-called AAA studios release monsterous 100GB+ games and suggest users buy external hard drives and push companies like Sony to release systems with multi-terabyte drives...
Personally I am grateful to Nintendo for still optimizing. I understand why other company's games get so big, but I don't buy for a moment that they can't make them significantly smaller. They just don't because it has become the norm for them that they no longer have to, to sell.
Don’t see any reason to be concerned.
1) it could just be better compression in general
2) the art styles are different. The “woolley” graphics style probably lead to harder to compress art since you don’t want to smooth out all the finer wool detailing, versus the more flat art book style of this title
3) they’re completly seperate games so asset reuse etc will vary drastically
@Heavyarms55 And don’t forget about those 10-100Gb patches on other plats...
@JackEatsSparrows 100gb patches?! Good lord, what game had a patch that size?!
If it’s using physicaly based rendering like Odyssey does this would cut the file size significantly just like in that game, Odyssey doesn’t rely on bimapped textures and instead almost entirely uses shader and material mapping meaning the file size is much smaller.
@jcgonzmo
Screen resolution has nothing to do with file size.
Other than that I don't see the point in comparing file size of two different games.
@Heavyarms55
@Heavyarms55
How do you come up with this nonsense? It takes time (thus money) to create all those assets. Devs don't do that for fun, it's because games really use it. Large amounts of high quality assets simply take up a lot of space.
Most Nintendo games are fairly simple and reuse a lot of the assets throughout the game. Even a game like BotW doesn't have massive variation in assets or lots of high resolution textures.
On top of that Nintendo games usually have little voice acting or FMV content which helps a lot in keeping size down.
Nintendo isn't doing some kind of magical optimization nor using some kind of super compression others don't. Don't forget that with Switch Nintendo has a financial reason to keep size down as well as carts are very expensive compared to optical media so it only makes sense to keep games as small as possible so they can go with the smallest (cheapest) carts.
@Heavyarms55 Fallout 76. That was after a 60g, too iirc
@JackEatsSparrows That is sick. Despite what some people seem to be suggesting, I just don't buy it. They can't even be trying to optimize or reduce the file sizes. Ending up with a single game taking 100-150GB on a PC is just sick. That'd be a good 10-15% of my old PC's entire hard drive. And half of the one before that, and more than my entire hard drive on the one before that...
@Heavyarms55 yeh, they weren’t. The day one patch on consoles was larger than the base game. Sure it’s just one example, but it shoots a hole in the argument that file size always equates to higher quality assets/hard work.
@JackEatsSparrows At that point the day one download isn't a patch, it is the game, and whatever you bought was the patch...
Does everyone here realize that Donkey Kong Country: Tropical freeze took up 6.6 GB on Switch, while the Wii U version took up 11.4 GB? They're both the same game, and the Switch version even has some extra content.It just means they're better at compressing software and getting a games file size as small as they can.
Why's everyone panicking? This just means they've gotten better at compression.
@AlexOlney,
Yeah, I really hope it isn't a much shorter game. But maybe all will be fine.
